A Montreal woman who police say falsely claimed she was raped will face charges of mischief and making false accusations.

Carole Thomas went public in February with her story of an assault that she said took place in October.

She claimed she had been attacked shortly before 23-year-old Jenique Dalcourt was murdered on a Longueuil bike path, and that  her attack happened less than two kilometres away from the scene.

Thomas also claimed the police did not take her case seriously.

At the time, police described her story as suspicious, and that there were no similarities between Thomas's case and Dalcourt's murder.

This week Thomas was served with a summons. She will face four charges including public mischief, producing and using a false document, and making false accusations.

Longueuil police spokesperson Nancy Colagiacomo said police always take cases of sexual assault very seriously.

"Sometimes we have cases where people report false crimes, but my message to women and men, victims of sexual crimes is we encourage them to continue to press these charges. We've worked over the years to facilitate the whole process of claiming these type of crimes," said Colagiacomo.

"We know it's not easy, it's difficult, but we encourage them to do so."

Thomas is due in court in July.
