The 2014 Rights and Freedoms Award was presented at a ceremony Thursday evening at Montreal City Hall.

The honour went to Equitas in recognition of its human rights education programs for young people in Montreal.

Equitas's program "Play Fair" is aimed at children six to 12 years old, and "Speaking Rights" is for children from 13 to 17.

Equitas programs have reached more than half-a million young people in the province.

"It's a great sort of recognition of the work we've been doing for more than 10 years here in Montreal, trying to reinforce children's awareness about their rights and really reinforcing values about respect for diversity, inclusion, equality," said Executive Director Ian Hamilton.

The ceremony took place on the 25th anniversary of the adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
