The attack on a Christmas market in Berlin has prompted an increase in security at similar markets around the world, including Montreal.

On Tuesday afternoon concrete barriers were placed at one entrance to the Place des Festivals -- although the other streets leading to the area are only protected by metal fences.

Montreal police and firefighters believe that such a barrier will be an effective deterrent to stop a similar attack from happening here.

Security guards posted at the entrances are also searching the bags of people who arrive at the market.

The attack in Berlin on Monday killed 12 people and injured dozens more.

The Islamic State is claiming responsibility for the truck attack.

German police are still hunting for the driver, having released the man arrested on Monday.
