The city has sold the international branch of Bixi to Montreal businessman Bruno Rodi.

Rodi bid $4 million for the operation, and even though another company made a higher bid, a judge ruled that offer came too late.

Rodi now owns the rights to overseas expansion of the Bixi concept, patents and software.

When it was run by the Public Bike System Company, Bixi's international arm had a debt of about $32 million, and taxpayers are still on the hook for most of that sum.

It seems Rodi is banking that he can run it more efficiently than the city.

But reporters were unable to find out exactly what he plans to do with the company because he was not in court and his lawyer didn’t answer questions from the media.

In the meantime, Bixi will be back in Montreal on Tuesday.

At first 2,000 bikes will be rolled out, with the rest hitting the streets by the end of April.

Last year, Bixi Montreal lost $4 million.

Bixi bikes can be found in Toronto, London, New York, Boston and Melbourne, among other cities.
