Projet Montreal is accusing the mayor of secretly planning to transform some of the city's main streets into one-way streets that would resemble urban highways.

Plateau Mont Royal borough mayor Luc Ferrandez said the city's executive has been having closed-door discussions to add reserved bus and bicycle lanes to major thoroughfares, along with turning them into one-way streets.

Ferrandez said he learned of the the plan when he saw a leaked draft, prepared by the STM, showing bus lanes being added to Papineau Ave., St. Denis St., Sherbrooke St., St. Laurent St., St. Urbain St., Lachapelle St., Rosemont Blvd., and Henri Bourassa Blvd.

According to Ferrandez, the lanes would be shared by buses and bicycles, while portions of De Lorimier Ave. and Papineau Ave. could be turned into one-way streets.

"We need a lot of details before saying it's a good project," said Ferrandez.

He isn't necessarily opposed to the plan, but he said these discussions should be held in the open, and include talks with the boroughs and groups like Velo Quebec.

"Imagine this through residential districts without some control, without some radar to make sure speed stays below 40km an hour, where the intersections are not protected. There are schools all over these big streets,"

said Ferrandez.

At a city council meeting on Monday Mayor Denis Coderre said several options are being studied by the city and the STM, but said nothing will be finalized until those studies are complete.

However he added that boroughs would not be surprised by a final decision.
