A West Island bar owner is in court Tuesday for the second day of a bail hearing.

Darryl Van Elk, co-owner of Marlowe on St. John's Blvd., was arrested on June 16 along with 11 other men and women as police raided a cocaine-trafficking ring.

Van Elk, 49, is charged with three counts of possessing loaded and prohibited or restricted firearms. He and three other men are also accused of conspiring to traffic drugs.

Testimony at the bail hearing is under a publication ban but the nature of the charges is such that Van Elk has to prove he is not a danger and can be released while waiting for his trial to begin.

"Those four accused have the burden to prove that they have to be released, that they are not a danger for the society," said Marilene Laviolette.

"That's different because they are charged with conspiracy of trafficking drugs."

Van Elk has also received a summons to appear before the Quebec Liquor Board.

In a summons Montreal police state that officers have had to deal with a litany of problems including finding drunk patrons asleep in the parking lot, a woman who had been sexually assaulted in the bar, and numerous cases of violence at the bar.

The hearing before the Liquor board is on July 21.
