OTTAWA -- The RCMP will provide a detailed update Friday on the attack last October by Michael Zehaf Bibeau that killed a Canadian soldier.

A source familiar with the plan says the briefing to the House of Commons public safety committee will "cover the video" Zehaf Bibeau made prior to his fatal attack at the National War Memorial and on Parliament Hill.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to discuss the matter publicly, would not say whether that means the video -- or parts of it -- would be shown to the committee.

A spokesman for the public safety minister says the federal government is calling for the video to be released publicly, despite the fact the investigation into the shooting is ongoing.

In addition, the Commons public safety and Senate security committees have requested the video be released.

In the days following the attack, RCMP Commissioner Bob Paulson said he wanted Canadians to see what he described as footage of Zehaf Bibeau explaining his actions in a deliberate and lucid manner. He has since said that while some transcripts might be provided to the public, he didn't think the video would ever be released.
