The Montreal taxi driver accused of running two men down after they refused to pay their fare has been charged in court.

Nick Forlinano Gauthier, 32, was charged Tuesday afternoon with dangerous driving, two counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm, two counts of criminal negligence and two counts of armed assault.

The taxi driver made a brief appearance at the Montreal courthouse Tuesday where the charges were filed.

The two victims were taken to hospital following the incident early Monday morning at St. Laurent Blvd. near Ontario St. One suffered serious injuries, the other minor injuries. Both are expected to survive.

Meantime, taxi drivers across town are talking about what may have gone wrong.

The industry needs more regulation and more surveillance, offered taxi driver Arieh Perecowicz.

“We should all have a video camera in every single car. We have it in a depanneur, a bank, every other institution,” he said, adding that he doesn’t believe background checks are done on drivers as often as they should.

“Are we supposed to have a background check on our drivers every year or two years? That's not being done. It's a fact, because it was not done with me,” he said.

Forlinano Gauthier remains in custody. He returns to court Wednesday for a bail hearing.
