A break-in at a business in Sainte-Sophie, in the Laurentians, degenerated into a shootout involving police officers Sunday night.

A spokesperson at the Sureté du Quebec said that they were called to the scene of an active break-in a automobile parts store on Boul. Sainte-Sophie (Route 158) around 7 p.m.

When officers arrived they spotted the suspect as he exited the back of the store.

The suspect then used his vehicle to ram the police car, at which point police say the man got out and ran toward police.

That's when a police officer fired at the suspect.

Police confirmed that a 22-year-old man was handcuffed and taken into custody.

One suspect was injured, and a police officer was treated for shock. Both were taken to hospital for treatment.

Quebec's Bureau of independent investigations (BEI) is going to examine the case.

The suspect is due in court in St. Jerome Monday afternoon to face charges of breaking and entering.
