Several blocks of St. Denis St. were closed Monday morning for emergency roadwork -- and it's expected the work will last until at least Thursday.

The Rosemont Petite Patrie borough announced the closure late Sunday, saying northbound lanes from Saint Gregoire St. to Rosemont Blvd. would be closed.

Only one lane of southbound traffic is open for that 400 m stretch of St. Denis.

Earlier this year the city of Montreal began exploratory roadwork on other sections of St. Denis, in preparation for major infrastructure work due to begin in January.

The city will be doing major reconstruction of water mains and sewer lines in the area, as well as upgrading subterranean electrical lines, but first it has to find out the status of the existing pipework.

To that end crews were digging up the street and exposing the pipes to determine their status, with work taking place in several spots from Beaubien St.. to Duluth Ave.

Several blocks were closed between Marie-Anne and Duluth earlier this month.
