The nomination of an actress and singer for the Liberals has the party under fire.

They have chosen third-place candidate Lucie Gagnon to replace the winner, who recently stepped down, instead of runner-up François Laramée.

The party initially voted in April for Francine Crevier-Bélair to run in the South Shore riding of Pierre-Boucher-Les Patriotes-Verchères.

She was then asked to step down over financial matters relating to a defaulted loan linked to her 2013 bid for mayor of Boucherville.

Laramee came in second, with 29 per cent of the votes in the Liberal nomination for that riding; Gagnon had 14 per cent.

This is not the first time the party has been questioned over its candidate in a Quebec riding. Last week, Melanie Joly won the Liberal nomination in Ahuntsic-Cartierville on the third ballot by 194 votes, but competitor Grace Batchoun appealed the win, saying that she and her team found several irregularities.

A committee of the federal Liberal party rejected Batchoun’s appeal.
