How did Quebecers deal with the long, cold winter of 2013-2014?

Many chose to stay home and drink, it would seem.

The Quebec SAQ liquor corporation has announced an increase of five percent in wine sales and 2.1 percent in the sales of spirits for the first three months of 2014, compared to the first three months of 2013.

Profits were up by $234.2 million, a hike of 5.8 percent and Quebec wines, which officials had expressed an interest in better promoting, saw a rise in sales of 60 percent, selling 100,000 more bottles more than one year earlier.

SAQ brass noted, however, that the increase was partially due to the fact that the Easter break was included in this year’s results, while that same holiday break fell outside of the first three month period for 2013.
