Montrealers got a preview of what will be one of the largest infrastructure projects in North America, as TV cameras were given a tour of the site that will be home to the new Champlain Bridge.

The cameras were shown the main span jetty, which will support a tower that will be the main visual element of the bridge.

“This main span tower will be the one that supports the cables stay, which will support the main span over the St. Lawrence Seaway channel and also support the back span over the St. Lawrence River,” said Daniel Genest, director of coordination for Signature Sur Le St. Laurent, the company designing the new bridge. “This is really the visually stunning element of the new Champlain Bridge.”

The plan calls for 58 footings to be installed that will support the $4.2 billion bridge, 52 of which have been completed.

The bridge is expected to open in December, 2018.
