Tuesday marked the last day police searched for a missing boater off the shores of Laval.

After four days, there has been no sign of 23-year-old Giordano Castronovo. Surete du Quebec divers say they will not return to the site Wednesday.

Friends and family are not giving up hope that he will be found alive, however, and are vowing to continue the search themselves Wednesday. They have also set up a Facebook page in hopes of finding the young man.

Castronovo has been missing since Saturday, when he was thrown overboard during a boating accident.

His girlfriend Jodie Donaldson was beside him.

“I know he's alive and he's a fighter, he's the best person I know for this kind of, for survival and... he's there....he's here,” she said through tears.

Castronovo was on a speedboat with nine others when it crashed into a ferry crossing from Laval to Ile-Bizard.

His family says the weather was poor at the time of the collision.

Police say Castronovo may have hit his head after being thrown from the boat. He was not wearing a life jacket.

“It's very tough for them. They're convinced he's on an island here somewhere, you know, semi-conscious. We've checked, there's nobody there so far,” said Laval police spokesperson Franco Di Genova.

The search has been difficult for SQ divers, with poor visibility in the water and strong currents.

“The current keeps pushing him either left or right and he's got to concentrate on that area, so it's very tough apparently,” said Di Genova.
