Montreal’s sizeable Italian community is organizing to send aid to that country following the devastating earthquake that killed 250 people.

At a meeting in St. Leonard, several community organizations vowed to band together to organize fundraising efforts to aid in the reconstruction of the towns destroyed by the quake. They are encouraging anyone who wishes to donate to do so through the Canadian Red Cross.

For those unable to donate online, churches and community centres are being recruited to serve as spots where people can offer to get involved.

Among those in attendance at the meeting was Italian Consul General to Montreal Marco Riccardo Rusconi, who has only been in office for 25 days. He said that though it is tragic his introduction to many community members came through this tragedy, he is impressed by the compassion he has seen.

“The protagonists in this operation are people, are Italian nationals here who help Italian nationals in Italy,” he said. “Of course, the consulate general supports and recommends and pushes for action. But there is no need to push for action because it is something natural that comes from the community. As consul general we support all possible activities and initiatives in money collection.”

Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre has also said the city will support initiatives to help.
