A Montreal man accused of first-degree murder in the stabbing death his girlfriend says he believed he was the last to know she was cheating on him.

Jonathan Exi and girlfriend Justine Macena Blaise moved into an apartment together in Montreal North in 2010.

The prosecution says Exi snooped through her phone and discovered she was talking to her ex.

The discovery prompted arguments which sometimes became heated. One night in 2012, Blaise left their apartment to stay at a neighbour’s house.

Exi soon found out the neighbour was Blaise’s ex-boyfriend. The next day, he allegedly stabbed her about 60 times. The only witness was her young son from a previous relationship.

Testifying in his defence, Exi said he was in love with Blaise but found out neighbours and friends were making fun of him behind his back, which lead him to believe she was cheating on him.

Exi also spoke about his life as an immigrant from Haiti, and mental health issues he has been dealing with for at least a decade.

The trial continues.
