Police are trying to determine why a 33-year-old man drove at high speed on Viau St. Tuesday night, causing a series of crashes and taking off on foot before he was captured.

The events began at 11 p.m. when, according to witnesses, a driver speeding south on Viau hit a car travelling in front of him, and then rammed a parked car and a lamp post at St. Zotique St.

A 47-year-old woman was hurt in that collision and taken to hospital to be treated for whiplash, but her injuries are not life-threatening.

The car that caused the crash ended up on its side in the middle of the street.

Good Samaritans helped the driver escape the car, but without so much as a thank you, he fled the scene on foot.

The driver climbed out and left the scene before police arrived.

Another 45 minutes later, a man called police to say his car had been hijacked while he was at 33rd Ave. and Chapman St.

Officers on patrol spotted the stolen car and followed the driver slowly to avoid a high-speed chase.

“They followed him at a very low speed.  It wasn't even a chase; they were following the guy who refused to stop,” said Andre Leclerc of the Montreal police.

Police caught up with him soon thereafter on Rosemont Blvd. near Orleans Ave., where the man took off on foot.

Police officers chased the man who fought back and resisted arrest, but they were finally able to force him into the back of a squad car and transport him to a police station.

"He seemed like he was under the effect of drugs," said Const. Manuel Couture.

“he was aggressive he was under the influence of drugs, it was very obvious,” added Leclerc.

Police say the man under arrest and matches the description of the suspect in every event that took place.

"He has been brought to the investigation centre where he will be questioned by investigators," said Couture.

Police later said the suspect was taken to hospital for treatment and had yet to be questioned.

He is expected to face charges of dangerous driving and robbery.
