Testimony in the fourth day of the Luka Magnotta trial saw the prosecution introduce a timeline of events the night Lin Jun died, including surveillance video that captured the last images of the Chinese student.

According to testimony heard Thursday, the apartment building at 5720 Decarie Blvd. had four surveillance cameras -- one at the front door that catches Magnotta and Lin Jun arriving together at 10:20 p.m. on May 24, 2012.

A few hours later, at 2:06 am, Magnotta is seen leaving the apartment alone, wearing Lin’s t-shirt.

A camera in the basement of the apartment shows Magnotta dumping several bags and various items in the bins reserved for tenants throughout the night.

In the morning, he's seen leaving the building and returning with a suitcase similar to the one in which Lin’s torso was found.

During the day, he was seen again walking in and out of the apartment with various bags.

That evening, he dumped more bags in the garbage and finally at 10:15 p.m., he's seen taking out the suitcase, which, based on the images, looked to be heavy.

Days later, on May 29, building janitor Michael Nadeau noticed that a suitcase was not picked up with the rest of the garbage. It smelled bad, and it was covered with maggots. With the help of a tenant, he opened it, made the gruesome discovery, and immediately called 911.

When police investigators arrived, they actually thought Magnotta was the victim, but police entered Magnotta’s apartment, they found enough clues to conclude that was where the crime might have been committed.

Police also found a laptop containing the so-called murder video that had been circulating on the Internet.

It was only after they started looking at surveillance tapes that investigators came to the conclusion it was another man.

Earlier in the day, proceedings were delayed as lawyers discussed elements of the case, which saw extensive discussions of the sex life of the now-deceased Jun Lin Wednesday. The questioning left some uncomfortable, but aimed to determine if the murder could have been premeditated.

Montreal police's Caroline Simoneau showed items seized, changing her surgical gloves each time she picked a new one up.

Recorded testimony from onetime superintendant Eric Shorer - since deceased - was played. The court heard Shorer describing his initial encounter with Magnotta, who applied for the apartment using a passport as identification.

Magnotta told Shorer, according to the recording, that he had "a possible job as caregiver" and that he had a child in the area. He was dressed casually and seemed "very normal, very cordial."

The notion that Magnotta had a child had not been previously mentioned elsewhere.

The jury had previously seen photographs taken by Simoneau of evidence recovered in trash outside Magnotta's apartment and of packages that were mailed to Ottawa and Vancouver. Defence attorney Luc Leclair is now entering many of the items as exhibits.

The 32-year-old Magnotta is charged with first-degree murder in the slaying and dismemberment of Chinese student Lin Jun in an apartment in May 2012.

He has pleaded not guilty to five charges but will argue he is not criminally responsible because of mental disorder.

The trial resumes Monday.
