Two schools in Longueuil was placed on lockdown after reports of an armed man in the area. Those reports appear to be unfounded.

An anonymous caller contacted security at CEGEP Edouard Montpetit at 9:45 Friday morning to say he had seen an armed man walking in a hallway.

The school immediately contacted police and locked down the school, with certain areas of the school being evacuated. About 2,000 students remained in the building.

The high school adjacent to the CEGEP, Jacques Rousseau high school, was also placed on lockdown.

Longueuil police searched the grounds for any sign of the alleged gunman, but after an hour concluded there was no danger.

"There were no gunshots," said Longeuil police spokeperson Melanie Mercille. "Student security is not compromised."

The CEGEP cancelled classes for the rest of the day.

The students who had been locked down were allowed to leave around 11:45 a.m. although police say it took several hours to get everyone out of the building.

Police are now trying to find out who made the phone call giving the false alarm.
