The race is shaping up in the upcoming Levis by-election, which will be a first chance for voters to pass judgment on Quebec's new Liberal government.

Today the Coalition Avenir Quebec announced that its candidate will be former TV news anchor Francois Paradis.

Paradis is a widely-recognized figure who hosted a noon-time call-in show on TVA for several years along with other programs. He also recently penned an autobiography focusing on his recent battle with cancer.

Levis City Councillor Janet Jones will represent the Liberals.

Premier Philippe Couillard recently referenced the campaign during question period, as part of his criticism of the visit by several Parti Quebecois members to watch the Scotland independence vote. "We went door to door in Levis, not in Glasgow," he said to warm applause from his caucus.

The PQ has yet to name its candidate for the Levis by-election.

The riding was left vacant after CAQ finance critic Christian Dube quit to take a senior job at the Caisse de Depot on August 15.

The Liberals have made an aim of attempting to increase the number of women in their ranks. Only 18 of the 70 Liberal MNAs are women.
