The girl who was found unconscious in a pool in Ile-Bizard Saturday has died.

The five-year-old girl's condition took a turn for the worse after she was pulled from a backyard pool at a birthday party on Chevremont St.

A friend of the family pulled the girl from the pool and started performing CPR on her immediately until emergency services took over. She was rushed to the Lakeshore Hospital and then to the Montreal Children's Hospital.

She had a pulse before she reached the Children' Hospital.

A 35-year veteran firefighter with the city of Montreal, but new to the Ile Bizard station, Ile Bizard fire station Capt. Glenn Patton said he was struck by the number of drownings on the West Island each year.

Among his suggestions for making pools safer for families is to always designate an adult to watch the pool at all times during family get-togethers.
