Despite controversy over its location, Montreal’s fourth safe injection site is now open.

The site, run by Spectre du Rue, drew fire for its proximity to Marguerite Bourgeoys Elementary School on Ontario St. Parents and school officials have threatened legal action, saying the facility will attract drug dealers to the area.

Spectre du Rue has argued that it’s been providing services in the area for more than 20 years. However, the South-Central CIUSSS, which provides oversight, has promised to modify the operational hours and to increase security.

The site has been approved for one year by Health Canada.

Three other safe injection sites have opened in Montreal since summer, including a mobile unit. In the spaces, drug users are able to inject themselves under medical supervision, with the aim being to cut down on overdoses and transmission of diseases.
