An ethnic nationalist group set up an anti-immigration banner at the Olympic Stadium, but it was swiftly removed.

The banner read "Remigration" -- which is the term used by ethnic nationalists to demand all immigrants be returned to their country of origin.

The group Atalante Quebec, which is dedicated to creating a country for "Quebecois de souche," said it set up about ten banners at or around the stadium Sunday night.

Cedric Essiminy of the Olympic Park said the banners were taken down early Monday morning.

"The perimeter here is the property of the Olympic Park so any kind of banner that doesn't have the approval of the Olympic park is taken down. For is it's basic policy," said Essiminy.

The stadium is currently being used to house asylum seekers who illegally crossed the border while they wait for background checks -- and ultimately hearings which will likely see them deported.

Essiminy said because the banner called for immigrants to be removed from Quebec, the OIB notified police.

"In this case because it's a specific banner, and regarding the situation, we filed a report, give it to the SPVM, and the banner they have it in their hands as we speak.

On Tuesday afternoon the Montreal police department's hate crimes unit took over the investigation.

It is still determining if posting the banners was a crime.

Last week, banners with the same "remigration" message were set up near Quebec City.
