Two construction workers were hurt early Tuesday morning when a bridge being demolished in St. Hyacinthe collapsed.

The men were rushed to hospital where they are expected to survive.

Crews were tearing down the Laframboise Blvd. bridge over Highway 20 using heavy equipment when a piece of debris fell onto the crane the two injured men were using and knocked it over.

Transport Quebec and the Worker's Health and Security Board (CSST) were notified of the accident and sent investigators to the scene to verify what happened.

Police were also notified, and the Sureté du Quebec arrived with the knowledge they would likely be needed to divert traffic.

Demolition of the overpass forced the closure of several lanes of Highway 20, and because of the delays caused by the injuries the Eastbound lanes were only re-opened around 6:30 a.m.
