A team of professional and student archeologists on Ile-Saint-Bernard have uncovered ancient artifacts.

The site was once a trading post in New France, but the dig shows a history that predates French occupation.

Thousands of Aboriginal, colonial and religious artifacts were unearthed, including a coin from 1593. The majority were from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Universite de Montreal anthropology professor Adrian Burke said the discovering help shed light on how people in the area once lived.

“We had an idea of what was here, we had an idea of the potential because we did so some work last year,” said Burke. “I would say it definitely surpassed our expectation.”
