Up to 800 homes were destroyed by Quebec’s spring floods and thousands remain in need of repairs, according to an update Thursday from Public Security Minister Martin Coiteux.

The government has set up temporary offices across the affected regions to speed up the inspections and permits required.

In some cases, homes will have to be built elsewhere.

Coiteux said 65 municipalities will be required to get up-to-date flood-zone mapping to comply with current government regulations.

“We just want to make sure we have the appropriate way to evaluate the losses. We want to make sure if there are exceptional cases, they will be treated in the appropriate way – in a scientific way; in a way that is based on objective criteria. This is what we're setting up; a vehicle by which we'll make sure the current legislation is applied,” he said.

Public consultations will be held July 10 in all regions affected by the floods.
