There's a measure of relief for many people in Riviere-Ouelle, northeast of Quebec City after a man was found guilty in the murder of Nancy Michaud.

Francis Proulx, 30, was convicted Wednesday of first-degree murder in the killing that shocked the political establishment last year.

Michaud worked in the riding office of Natural Resources Minister Claude Bechard before she was kidnapped, killed and then sexually assaulted.

On Thursday, Bechard said his department will do everything they can to help Michaud's husband and two young boys through their terrible ordeal.

Public grief

The husband, Daniel Casgrain, shared his grief with the public on Wednesday, saying he hopes the verdict will make it possible to keep living for his sons, aged 2 and 7.

Speaking in Quebec City, minister Bechard talked about his admiration for Casgrain.

He's a good guy," Bechard told reporters.

"He was so in love with Nancy ... you know that was the perfect kind of couple.

"They had a great family, maybe that's where he found the will and the capacity to do what he did yesterday."

Proulx still faces several other charges related to the murder.
