The second of the two men involved in a spectacular prison escape three years ago has pleaded guilty.

Benjamin Hudon-Barbeau and Danny Provencal escaped from St. Jerome prison on March 17, 2013 when two other people rented a helicopter and forced the pilot to land on a prison tower.

Hudon-Barbeau and Provencal climbed aboard, then the aicraft flew a short distance and all four men fled.

The two escapees and their accomplices were all captured within hours following a standoff with police.

Provencal pleaded guilty to the escape last year and was sentenced to seven years in prison.

On Monday morning Hudon-Barbeau was about to go to trial when he decided to plead guilty as well.

Hudon-Barbeau is already serving a prison sentence for a weapons conviction, and as a result of that conviction, his criminal history, and other pending charges, the Crown is seeking to have him declared a dangerous offender and keep him imprisoned indefinitely.

Hudon-Barbeau is also charged with two counts of first-degree murder and three of attempted murder. The trial on those charges begins later this year.
