A 41-year-old man was shot and killed by police on Friday night in the town of St-Cyrille-de-Wendover, near Drummondville.

According to the Bureau of Independent Investigators, two Surete du Quebec officers were responding to a call regarding a family dispute at around 9:45 p.m. They found the man brandishing a knife.

After briefly speaking to the man, he rushed at the officers and was shot at least once.

According to neighbours, a woman who lived in the house had recently entered a relationship with the man who was shot. Police had been called to their home numerous times in the few months they were together.

"The woman is a good person but she didn't find the right man," said neighbour Yolande Marceaux. "(He was an) aggressive man."

The woman has a daughter who is approximately eight-years-old who was at the scene during the altercation, as was the woman's father.

The neighbours said they heard the man leave the house, swearing loudly. When police arrived, they heard the man speeding away in his vehicle, yelling "I'm going to kill you," at the woman.

At some point, the man parked and reentered the house, where the shooting happened. The neighbours said they heard two shots fired in quick succession.

Another neighbour said the fight appeared to be over a cell phone, with the man claiming it was his and the woman saying it had been a gift to her.

The woman made the 911 call from a neighbour's house.

Officers of the SPVM are on the scene to aid the independent investigators with the forensic aspects of the investigation.
