A man was shot and killed outside his home in Ste. Therese, just north of Laval, around 9 p.m. Thursday.

The victim was rushed to hospital in critical condition but he died of his injuries overnight.

Police have not identified the victim but there are reports he is Sylvain Ethier, who was charged earlier this year with leading a tobacco smuggling ring.

Meanwhile a burned-out car was found 60 km north, in St. Adele. It's a common habit of murders committed by organized crime to burn the vehicle used by an assassin in order to thwart the police investigation.

Ethier was one of nearly 60 arrested in March as part of Operation Tarantula (Mygale), with the Sureté du Quebec saying Ethier was in charge of the traffickers.

Those suspects were rounded up throughout Quebec and Ontario, including three residents of Kahnawake.

At the time police say biker gangs were working with aboriginal criminals to buy tobacco in the U.S. and then smuggle it into Canada to be sold in Kahnawake and the Six Nations.

The SQ seized about $5 million in cash, along with thousands of kilograms of tobacco and more than 800 kg of cocaine, 21 kg of methamphetamines, and some marijuana.
