A 43-year-old man was arrested at St-Vincent public pool in Laval on Sunday because of his choice of swimwear.

Zakaria Sorhri says he was treated unfairly by police who arrested him in full view of his wife and children.

The city of Laval says Sorhi was arrested because it was obvious he was wearing underwear in the pool — which is prohibited — and was asked twice to leave.

According to reports, Sorhri left the pool area when he was asked to. Then, asked an officer if what he was wearing was appropriate. When the officer said what he was wearing was acceptable, Sorhi returned to the pool and was told a second time that he could not enter the pool.

A video taken of the incident shows the man being wrestled to the ground as he being arrested as his wife and children watch.

“The man was covered in suntan lotion when he's covered in suntan lotion you can’t really get a good grip on him, he's very slippery that's why a female police officer grabs him by the ankle and and the other police officer is trying to put an arm lock on him which he's having problems with again because he's covered in suntan lotion,” said Franco Di Genova, a Laval police spokesperson.

Laval police say the man was verbally abusive and resisted arrest. According to reports, Sorhri is planning to make a police ethics complaint.

Sorhri could not be reached for comment.
