A 37-year-old man was charged in the Longueuil courthouse Monday relating to a sexual assault on a teenager at a soccer field in Greenfield Park last week.

Yanick Toupin is facing three charges: sexual assault, sexual interference and confinement.

Police say a girl who is 12 or 13 was sexually assaulted in a bathroom near a soccer field in Greenfield Park as a girls' soccer game was going on. Some nearby softball players in Rene-Veillet Park heard the girl's screams, chased the man down and held him until police arrived to arrest him.

Longueuil police said the suspect touched the girl's genitals over her clothes.

Softball players in the park describe seeing the man pulling his pants up as he came running out of the bathroom.

Toupin looked lost as he was formally charged in court Monday.

He will remain behind bars until his bail hearing on Wednesday. A charge of sexual assault with a minor comes with a minimum sentence of one year and a maximum of 14.

Longueuil city councillors plan to thank the good Samaritans at their next softball game on Wednesday.
