The Parti Quebecois leadership race heated up on Sunday as two candidates officially launched their campaigns.

Longtime party stalwart Jean-Francois Lisee made his first campaign stop in his hometown of Thetford Mines. Lisee had initially announced his candidacy to replace former leader Pierre Karl Peladeau in May.

In Montreal, lawyer and TV host Paul St-Pierre Plamondon also held a rally to raise support for his bid. Plamondon had announced his candidacy earlier in the month.

All candidates must filed their papers by the end of June.

Alexandre Cloutier, Veronique Hivon and Martine Ouellet are the other three candidates vying to replace Peladeau, who resigned abruptly in early May, citing the welfare of his children.

The vote to replace him as leader will be held in October.
