Some people are shocked that Liberal MP Alexandre Mendes is going to host Canada Day celebrations at a mosque.

The member of parliament for Brossard-St. Lambert wants to build bridges between various communities, and so came up with the idea of celebrating the national holiday at an Islamic Community Center in her riding.

Mendes wrote that several of her constituents approached her and told of feelings of exclusion and resentment felt by the Muslim community.

Usmain Shaikh said harassment of Muslims is a routine occurance.

"'We don't belong here! Go back home! Why are you here? These kinds of statements, we get it on a regular basis. Some of the women get knocked down on the streets," said Shaikh.

"We tried to convey this message many ways and no one is listening."

In an effort to show that all Canadians have similarities, the Islamic Community Centre will host Canada Day festivities inflatable structures for children.

And even though Muslims will be fasting for Ramadan, the centre will serve cake and ice cream.

"I think this event will open the eyes and ears of everyone," said Shaikh.

Mendes said as a Liberal government that has tried to be proactive about inclusiveness, this is one way to bring people together.

In addition, more than 40 people will take their citizenship oaths on July 1 at the centre.
