Two streets in Montreal are closed Thursday because of water main breaks.

The first hole opened up overight in Lachine, near the intersection of Victoria St. and 32nd Ave., and by 3 a.m. was large enough to block the street.

Traffic is being forced to detour between 28th and 32nd Aves. on Victoria until at least noon.

Water has been shut off to the neighbourhood, and will remain off until the leak is located and repaired.

Meanwhile at least one lane on Ste. Catherine St. is closed because of flooding between McGill College Ave. and University St.

A water main broke at some point on Tuesday or Wednesday, and crews have been on site since Wednesday afternoon.

They are expected to finish their work Thursday afternoon when they will fill the hole with gravel.

Crews say they cannot repave the section now because of snow removal commitments and the weather, and say they will cover the hole with asphalt in January. .
