A seniors’ home in La Prairie was evacuated Wednesday due to an unusually high presence of carbon monoxide that was detected inside the building.
About 150 people, including many with reduced mobility, were forced out of the La Belle Epoque residence on Emilie Gamelin St. around noon.
No one was injured, but four employees were taken to hospital.
The evacuation took place with the help of firefighters from neighbouring stations.
Carbon monoxide is an invisible, odourless gas, which is difficult to spot without a detection device.
It can cause illness and even death in extreme cases.
The seniors’ home is now being ventilated, and the residents should soon be able to return home.
