MONTREAL - Two teachers at Nesbitt Elementary have tried a novel approach to teaching literacy: they are helping their students write and build full-fledged books.

As part of the Impress program, the students are creating books with ISBN numbers that allow the books to be sold at any store.

"One of the objectives is to motivate children not just in reading, but also in writing," said Luisa Mercadante. "When he is put in an activity where he is doing something and creating something, he doesn't just build up his abilities, but also his self-confidence."

Students need to write the text, create the artwork and bind the books on deadline.
