The original contracts signed by Jackie Robinson with both the Montreal Royals and the Brooklyn Dodgers are on display at Montreal’s city hall.

Robinson, the first black man to play Major League baseball, played in Montreal in the 1946 season.

He signed with the Dodgers the following year, a feat that Martin Luther King Jr. said was part of the origin of the civil rights movement in the United States.

This is the first time these contracts have returned to Montreal, 70 years after the second baseman debuted with the Royals.

The Collectors Café made the contracts available and will display them at city hall from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, after being on display all day Wednesday.

American talk show host Larry king was in Montreal to help present the historic documents, which are valued at $36 million.
