The Liberal candidate for the Verdun by-election is Isabelle Melancon.

A long-time party devotee, she was most recently chief of staff for Helene David, the Minister of Higher Education.

"I'm very proud to be the candidate for the Liberal party in Verdun. Know that I will be present for every one of you," said Melancon.

The seat was vacated earlier this year when then-Transportation Minister Jacques Daoust resigned from politics.

Verdun has been a Liberal stronghold ever since it was created in 1966, with the party's candidate normally getting thousands more votes than their rivals.

The closest election was in 2012, when the Parti Quebecois candidate came within 700 votes of the Liberal MNA.

Three other ridings will be holding by-elections this season, including St. Jerome, Marie-Victorin, and Arthabaska.

St. Jerome must be filled by Nov. 2, since months after Pierre Karl Peladeau resigned as leader of the PQ and the MNA for the riding.

Bernard Drainville vacated the Marie-Victorin seat soon thereafter to take a job as a radio host.

The seat in Arthabaska riding was left vacant when Sylvie Roy died suddenly during the summer from acute hepatitis.
