Hema-Quebec is urging more black Quebecers to donate blood.
The provincial blood agency says there has been a tremendous increase in the number of black donors in the past five years -- going from just 200 to 4,050 people.
However Hema-Quebec says it needs more people to donate blood, particularly to help those who need frequent blood donations.
People with sickle-cell anemia, which affects black people more than those from other ethnic backgrounds, may need frequent transfusions, and they are more likely to find compatible blood types among their own ethnic group.
A special blood drive will be held on Feb 20 at the Round Table of Black History month, but blood can be donated every day in Quebec.
