A team of Montreal computer whizzes have won the AquaHacking 2016 competition with an app that informs users of the levels of contamination in swimming areas of the St. Lawrence River.

Info-Baignade Montreal, which was comprised of university students and professionals, took home a $50,000 prize at the end of the two-day event, which wrapped up on Friday.

The second ever AquaHacking summit brought together citizens, international speakers and politicians like Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre and Quebec City Mayor Regis Labeaume.

The goal of the competition is to find solutions to preserve restore and enhance North American waterways, with the St. Lawrence being the focus on this year’s event.

Among other entrants was a drone that collects data in case of oil or chemical spills and pillars that slow shoreline erosion.
