Police are hunting for a man who stabbed and killed a cashier at a grocery store in Montreal.

Clemence Beaulieu-Patry, 20, was attacked around 8:30 p.m. Sunday inside the Maxi grocery store on Cremazie Blvd. near Papineau Ave.

Dozens of shoppers and employees were in the store when the man walked inside and got into an altercation with the woman.

He pulled out a knife and stabbed her in the neck, then ran off.

She was rushed to hospital but her injuries were too severe to survive.

“Until we know who this person is, there's no way to know what's the motive,” said Montreal police spokesperson Daniel Lacoursiere.

Store employees have confirmed her identity. Beaulieu-Patry attended College Maisonneuve and recently celebrated her two-year anniversary with her boyfriend.

Police set up a perimeter around the store and used search dogs in an effort to locate the suspect, but as of Monday morning were unsuccessful.

They have also talked to the 30 witnesses in the store, and have obtained surveillance video and photos that show the attack and the suspect running away.

"The quality of the pictures that were taken are very, very ordinary, so presently the investigators are working with some specialists to try to better the images that were taken, to try to identify him," said Lacoursiere.

He is a black man aged 25 to 30 years old, and about 5'8". He was wearing a black hat, black coat, black pants and black shoes.

Police are working with witnesses to create a composite sketch of the attacker.
