Greenfield Park councillors are upset they will not be able to speak at Canada Day festivities.

For 20 years Greenfield Park councillors have been making speeches at the annual Canada parade in the former city-turned-borough of Longueuil.

But this year, borough councillors have been told that because the central city is paying for the parade, protocol dictates that only Mayor Caroline St-Hilaire will be allowed to speak.

Councillor Robert Myles, who has had frequent run-ins with St-Hilaire, said he believes the former Bloc Quebecois MP, married to a Parti Quebecois MNA, has no interest in celebrating Canada Day.

"I personally don't think she wants to be here," said Myles.

"I've deliberately taken some Canadian flags and given them to her, and I turned around and they went out her left hand."

St-Hilaire was not available to speak on Thursday, but a spokesperson said that Longueuil's protocol is the same as other cities around the province.

The spokesperson said that St-Hilaire was not making a political statement by her actions, and her only goal was to celebrate with her fellow citizens.
