Widespread flu outbreaks have arrived in Quebec, and the ill are flocking to emergency rooms.

Doctors say that is actually pointless, since there is no need for advance medical treatment for the virus.

Instead people suffering from the flu should stay at home, rest, drink plenty of fluids, and use painkillers to cope with pain and fever.

The Montreal Children's Hospital and Ste. Justine's Hospital have advised parents to stay away unless their children are very ill and have provided criteria for what qualifies as a medical emergency.

The good news is that this year's flu outbreak is being described as fairly moderate.

Last year's vaccination was only 20 per cent effective but this year's shot is much better.

Meanwhile Health Minister Gaetan Barrette says family doctors are taking steps to offer more clinical hours.

"Family physicians have agreed, and we have a signed agreement on this, that over the next two years, beginning last June, they are to get there. Extended opening hours, seven days a week for everybody," said Barrette.

Even though the flu season is underway, doctors says there is still time to get vaccinated, and that everyone should be immunized.
