Police and fire investigators are looking for owner of a Laval residence that burned to the ground on Tuesday.

Officials said it remains unclear if the man was caught in the blaze at 130 Edimbourg, but rescue workers are on the scene. Police said they are attempting to contact the man's friends and family to determine his whereabouts.

"We know who he is, investigators are in contact with the family to try and find out if he's on vacation," said Laval police spokesperson Franco Di Genova. "His car is not here, so it's possible he is in, for example, Quebec City and didn't advise any of his family he was going there. It's a mystery right now."

The two-storey home caught fire at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday afternoon and damage was extensive, in part because a propane tank was inside the house.

Forty firefighters spent several hours at the scene battling the flames and trying to prevent them from spreading to other nearby houses.

A neighbour who saw smoke coming from the house and called 911 said the man was around 54-years-old and hasn't seen him in a few weeks.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
