Federal officials announced Wednesday an infusion of cash for summer student jobs in Quebec.

As much as $12.6 million is being spent in Montreal to hire nearly 4,000 students.

The funding is almost double what they were under the Conservative government, but the Liberals say they campaigned on improving the middle class and this is one way of doing that.

Tom Mulcair of the NDP was at Wednesday's announcement, which was made in his riding of Outremont, where 348 summer jobs for students were funded.

Across Quebec, federal funding will help just over 17,000 student summer jobs in a range of areas. Across Canada it’s 77,000 – more than double what it was under the Harper government

The federal Liberal budget included a $29 billion deficit and $600 million of that is devoted to youth employment.
