MONTREAL - Canada's busiest span will be ferrying fewer vehicle over the raging St. Lawrence this weekend as maintenance workers patch up the ailing Champlain Bridge.

The work, which began Friday evening, will last until 5 a.m. Tuesday and see only one lane open in each direction on the approach from Highway 15 to the bridge.

On the bridge itself, two lanes will remain open towards the south and only one lane will stay open northbound towards Montreal.

The lanes will be narrowed to three metres and wide loads will be directed to detour routes.

Certain other ramps in the Turcot Interchange will also be closed for touch-ups as will the access to the Champlain from route 132.

The work will continue during upcoming weekends as well, depending on weather conditions.
