A British magazine has named Westmount’s Eugenie Bouchard the world’s most marketable athlete.

The 21-year-old Bouchard supplants F1 racer Lewis Hamilton in the top spot on the 50-person SportsPro list, and becomes the first female to take the top spot.

Brazilian soccer player Neymar came in second and U.S. golfer Jordan Speith, the young phenom who ran away with the 2015 Masters, came in third. American swimmer Missy Franklin was in fourth and Hamilton dropped to fifth on the list.

Bouchard had a breakout year last season, reaching the semifinals at the Australian and French Opens and the Wimbledon final. She climbed to a career-high No. 5 rank last October.

But she has struggled as of late, and the magazine acknowledged that fact but says it doesn’t deter from her marketability. The magazine’s rankings, according to a news release, look to identify athletes’ marketing potential over the next three years, not their current potential.

“Eugenie Bouchard showed in 2014 that she is an athlete of tremendous potential who is able to make a real connection with her fans. The last few months have not gone as she might have hoped but we think her achievements so far are those of a player of substance who will make her mark at the top end of women’s tennis over the next three years,” said editor Eoin Connolly, adding that the attention she’s attracted outside the sporting world bolsters the notion that she could become a crossover star.

Editorial director James Emmett said Bouchard has what it takes to “succeed Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams as the face of the most commercially successful women’s sport on the planet.”

The rankings take into account an athlete’s age, home market, charisma, willingness to be marketed and crossover appeal.

There are 12 women on the list, three in the top 10. Steven Stamkos is the other Canadian to make the list and the only hockey player, ranked 37th.
