As tens of thousands of Quebecers head out on vacation, provincial police and Transport Quebec are asking drivers to be cautious on the roads over the next two weeks.

One-quarter of Quebec’s workforce is on leave and more people on the roads means a higher risk for accidents.

There have already been two fatal collisions on Quebec roads just one day into the construction holiday.

A motorcyclist died Saturday morning after hitting a truck on Charest Blvd. in Quebec City.

As well, a car struck a pole overnight in Saint-Lambert-de-Lauzon on Quebec City’s south shore. The passenger died from his injuries and the driver is in hospital in serious condition.

Last year, during this period, 11 people lost their lives in road tragedies in the SQ’s territory.

According to Transport Quebec the majority of road work in the province will be ongoing during the construction holiday so drivers are being urged to 'lift their feet and open their eyes' in areas where work is underway.

Additional police officers have been stationed at some road work sites and photo radars will be used to detect speeding.
