A 60-year-old man from Dollard des Ormeaux has been sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 12 years for killing his wife.

Timothy Rapley murdered Marilyn Chalout on Mother's Day in 2011. Chalout was about to leave her husband when she was killed.

During his trial Rapley claimed he had no memory of what had happened, and could not explain how he killed his wife.

The prosecution was not able to prove that Chalout's death was premeditated murder, so the trial concerned whether it was an accidental death or a deliberate killing.

Rapley was found guilty of second-degree murder last May and was sentenced Friday to life in prision with no possibility of parole for at least 12 years.

The minimum sentence for second-degree murder is ten years behind bars. Rapley's 12-year sentence is because of the aggravating factor of domestic violence.

Rapley tried to take his own life after he strangled his 65-year-old wife, and he was unconscious when he was discovered by police.

The couple's daughter had called authorities after being unable to contact her mother that day, which prompted police to force their way into the house.

In court, the prosecutor read a heart-wrenching letter from the couple's daughter in which she asked her father about what her mother endured.

"I wonder how much pain she was in. How long did she suffer?" she wrote.

Despite the tragedy, she is still in touch with her father and has visited him in jail.

Rapley expressed regret for his actions while speaking from the prisoner's box.

"There's not a day that goes by when I'm not thinking about Marilyn. Now I have to go on with my life."
